Tinta Barocca

Eben Sadie helped put Swartland back on the wine map and makes fantastic wines from old vines he's brought back to life. The wine is made from a parcel of old bush vine (ouwingerdreeks) Tinta Barocca planted in 1974. Tinta Barocca was originally brought to South Africa from Portugal to make a version of Port. Now it thrives as a red wine in its own right. It's very prone to sunburn, so yields are always low. Eben likens this wine to a mix between syrah and nebbiolo. Really intersting nose of redcurrants and plums with a hint of vanilla, cola and dark berry fruit. The palate is rich, with a dusky, ripe red berry fruit, and a hint of clove. The tannis are firm but it's still young and there's a freshness on the long mineral tinged finish.
