Piombaia Brunello di Montalcino 2016
This is an estateÃÂ that not only farms impeccably but makes the style of Brunello we really love. Piombaia is a fourth-generation family farm with twelve hectares of vineyard situated just a few kilometres south of Montalcino. The vines are at 400-600 metres altitude and separated in to twelve one-hectare plots, all farmed biodynamically. The wines are expertly crafted by Francesco Cantini to show the quality and intensity of fruit and its natural acidity rather than heavy extraction and whilst the Brunello has typical chewy tannins it is also really expressive and drinkable. And as if that wasnÃ¢ÂÂt enough, the wines are brilliantly priced for the quality.ÃÂ
Abundant red fruit and floral notes on the nose with just a very gentle hint of woodsy spice (barrel use is 70% Slovenian oak, 25% large French oak and 5% in large tonneau for 3 years).ÃÂ Tannins are firm yet fine grained and very nicely integrated in to the wine. A lighter, brighter style of Brunello.
